A free manual task risk check for New Zealand workplaces

Manual handling is behind a large share of workplace injury in New Zealand. Strains and sprains are the single biggest cause of work injury, and most of them trace back to lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and repetitive tasks. This free manual task risk check helps you find the tasks worth a closer look before they turn into an injury or an ACC claim.

The check screens a single task against the manual-task screening methods published by WorkSafe New Zealand, then gives you a clear, plain-English result in about two minutes. There is no sign-up, and you can download a branded PDF report to keep on file. It is built by Capability Solutions, a New Zealand workplace training provider, and where a task is flagged it points you to manual handling training for staff and leaders to build the capability to manage it.

How it works: two stages

Stage 1, the activity check. You pick a task type (lifting and lowering, carrying, pushing and pulling, repetitive upper-limb work, or seated work) and answer a few plain questions. The tool screens the task against WorkSafe's matching method and gives you an instant read: lower risk, or worth a closer look. This takes about two minutes.

Stage 2, the full analysis. If the activity check flags a task, you go straight into the matching WorkSafe assessment (NZMAC, NZRAPP, NZART, or the contributing factors checklist). The tool scores every risk factor, works out where the risk is coming from, shows you what to focus on first, and gives you the full report to download. You only do this stage for the tasks that need it, so your time goes where the real risk is.

Common questions about manual handling risk checks

What is a manual task risk check?

A manual task risk check is a quick screen that flags whether a physical task, such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or repetitive work, carries enough injury risk to need a closer look. This tool bases its screen on the WorkSafe New Zealand manual-task screening methods and returns a result in about two minutes.

How do I assess manual handling risk in New Zealand?

Screen each task against the factors WorkSafe New Zealand highlights: the load, the posture, the force, the frequency, and how long the task lasts. This tool walks you through those factors for one task and tells you whether it is lower risk or needs a fuller assessment, which is a practical first step before a formal manual handling risk assessment.

Is the manual task risk check free?

Yes. The check is completely free to use, with no sign-up required. You can download a branded PDF report of the result if you want a record to keep.

What manual tasks can I check?

You can screen lifting and lowering, carrying, pushing and pulling wheeled or non-wheeled loads, repetitive upper-limb work, and seated tasks. Each task type uses the matching WorkSafe New Zealand screening method behind the scenes.

Does this replace a full manual handling risk assessment?

No. It is a preliminary screen, not a formal risk assessment. It helps you spot which tasks are worth a proper look so you can prioritise. Where a task is flagged, the tool guides you through the fuller WorkSafe assessment and points you to training to manage it.
